To those ashamed of Toronto

This is a response I made to some criticizing Toronto's efforts in handling the situation this past weekend's G20 riots.

I don't know if there's much of a better way [for the police] to handle a situation we had this weekend...when the violent hide with the peaceful judgement calls get iffy. The ones arrested in queens park that were "peaceful" may very well not have been. The police had watched the violent protesters change and move into queens park as "peaceful protesters". Wether they got the right people or not there job is to get the rioters of the street and they were doing the best they can. I'm not saying that certain officers got out of hand but we shouldn't criticize the police as a whole based on the actions of a few. I'm not ashamed or disappointed with Toronto and not surprised there was some power tripping cops. In fact I'm proud how fast Toronto has pick up and moved on with it's routine. This is part of the advantage of a big city hosting an event like this; it's big enough that it's regular pace of life trumps events of chaos like this weekends. The only thing I'm disappointed in, is that there are people out there that go out purposely trying to cause havoc and tactics are to allude the publics attention on more important issues at hand.

I'm not against the G20 protests as I think it's important that voices are heard with free speech and peaceful protest. The unfortunate truth is who's listening to the messages of the unions or other peaceful activists when there is violence right along side?

I saw these glass bottles at Starbucks a few months back and I thought to myself, like most people I'm sure who saw them, how is this safe? A glass bottle no thicker then a standard drinking glass as a "portable" water bottle...Does this not complicate the aspect of portability?

Anyways they recalled the bottles because of shattering and the potential of lacerations...I don't think anyones surprised there but the designer...

Magic Mouse

I got the new Magic Mouse from apple today...I'm not much of a tech guy but this thing is pretty cool. It does everything the new mac's mouse pads do but easier to use. I'd recommend it if you have a mac.
Back to work though...Summer courses...

But for George Briggs new, I just got in my new tee's which include burnout v's with a little pocket, and pima cotton vneck and crew necks which are the softest nicest shirts you can find!

I love my Mac!

I got a mac about a month back and it is honestly the best piece of technology that I've gotten so far. Especially for Briggs. I've able to do more Photoshop and Illustrator since I don't have to deal with the lagging I got from windows and it's just easier to work on. Things that are complicated on windows are simplified on the mac and it's simply more user friendly. For designers or even just the regular user it is an incredible tool.

Anyways it's a beautiful day out! Go enjoy the sun!

Back in school after a two year break

Back to studying again. Took a break after high school for two years now I'm back in the routine again. Doesn't mean I'm giving up on George Briggs, I actually have a lot of time for it now finally since my schedule is a lot more flexible now. So it's been painting and hitting the books.

There's some collaborations that look like they're going to go into action which I'm very excited for and a lot of shirts have been painted. They just need to get logo'd, shot and they'll be ready for sale. I've lowered the price since I don't have to deal with retail which means better prices for you guys! Most shirts will be from $60 to $80 and they are still ALL HAND PAINTED BY BRUSH!

There's nothing like a straight edge shave. A closer than shave than you could ever get from however many blades or electric razor. If your not careful, it may be closer than you want. In this case you do need to practice, it's not easy at first. I know this from experience. But once you master it, it's not only a better shave but very therapeutic.

Things to keep in mind if your going to try shaving with a straight edge.
1. Heat your face with a hot towel.
2. Use a shaving cream with eucalyptus oil.
3. Stretch the skin your shaving!
Best thing to do is either have some one show you or youtube it. Otherwise you'll end up with a few interesting lines on your face...

Like most people that see these for the first time, your reaction's probably something like "What the hell?"...not an uncommon reaction from my friends. They're called FiveFingers. Essentially they're a "shoe" that allows your foot to act as it would with out the structure of a regular running shoe but protecting your foot from getting gashed open by a beer bottle. This is really a must have for any athlete. There are so many muscles in our feet that are neglected because of the support we get in our shoes. Running barefoot is one of the many exercises that will not only build stability in your feet, but your whole body too.

Restructuring George Briggs

George Briggs is going through a very big revamp. George Briggs will be going in two directions at the moment but it has to be approached in the right manner. Part of what makes me love running my line is the uniqueness and life of each shirt, being hand painted. The other part is the actual design and idea and getting that across to anyone interested. This is why I will be taking the company in two directions.

As of spring 2010 George Briggs will be releasing a new line. The designs will be painted on canvas and then transferred to screens. From there we will print each shirt by hand. The line will still be limited in editions and still have the same amount of care and effort that goes into our George Briggs Custom's.

George Briggs will still be doing a hand painted but only 1 maybe 2 designs per season with only 3 produced of each. I have not decided if these will be in stores or not. I'm thinking I like the idea of people from anywhere in the world being able to pick them up. Custom orders will still be taken as well.

Both lines will be made from 100% Pima Cotton. By far the finest in cotton if not materials for shirts out there. Extremely light and soft yet very structured. ALL cuts will be changing as well.

If I'm not posting frequently is because there is a lot changing and I don't want to post any news until it's confirmed. The basics I know, but everything else is very speculative right now. On both sides that I'm taking George Briggs there is a lot of work to be done.

So for now this is all I can say. I will be posting I get make more decisions. You'll have a Briggs on your back in now time, guaranteed!

I guess I should do a little blog about my trip.

WELL! I have to say, it was probably one of the most intense times of my life. After chilling with a group of friends for a month in southern Greece, and then touring mainland Greece with a final stop to the island of Santorini it was very easy to loose touch with reality! Being part Greek I feel it's my job to share some of the place you must hit.

1. Kalamata - If you want the beach life mixed with some insane clubs I would highly recommend it. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than the islands and you'll still have an amazing time. I'm not saying not to go to the islands of Greece but if you want to check out mainland Kalamata is definitely a good spot. Shipping's alright but nothing special.

I had to put this one up for my buddies (the surfer hand thing is only a joke...I promise)

Athens - You do not need more than a week in Athens...But make use of it properly. If you don't go to the Parthenon I don't know why you bothered to even go to Greece...But make sure you go to the right areas. Monastiraki and Syntagma are the very touristy areas...doesn't really do it for me. What ever you do, DO NOT GO INTO OMONIA at night, even avoid side streets and alleys during the day. I'm serious, it's not like the Jane and Finch where you might be in danger...you are almost certain to run into a heroin addict or someone not to pleasant.

2. Athens - Kolonaki - Think of it as Yorkville but what yorkville can't even attempt to come close to! The ultimate in high fashion! You will find everything from the designer brands such as Hermes, Gucci, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, ect...(There stores are far more refined than the ones here not to mention the selection being mind blowing). You'll also find smaller European designers and amazing boutiques pretty much every store you walk by...

3. Athens - Gazi - Good place to hang out for some drinks and dinner. Amazing lounges.

4. Nafpleo - Located in central Greece probably my favorite city on the mainland! It's by far one of the best places to get away for a few days. The beaches are alright but the town is amazing! There's a castle at the top of the town and most walkways in the town are marble. It's very scenic.

5. SANTORINI - Everyone must go to Santorini in there lifetime. It's really something you've never seen the likes of. My pictures nor any one's can do justice to how beautiful it is there. It's not a crazy party island but it's by far my favorite place in the world as of right now. So much I'm considering moving there for a few years!

Anyways the pictures should speak for themselves! One thing beware of! Fake drinks, they are everywhere! Doesn't matter if it's a high class place or just a club. If you get a headache or feel really drunk really quickly it's because you're pretty much drinking rubbing alcohol! You're safest bet is Beer. They can't mess with it.

What ever your looking for Greece has something for everyone. I'd recommend going not just because I'm Greek but because it is truly a beautiful place!

I've have to admit, since being back from Europe, I can understand why so many designers set up house in Europe. There is such an incredible amount of respect and appreciation for design and fashion. It's tempting to follow in the same path BUT I'm not going to for now because I think it's only a matter of time before North America gains similar feelings. But that's not going to stop me from opening up to European and Asian markets.

Back from my trip!

SO! It's been a while since I've updated everyone but I do have reason. If your not aware I took two months to go to Greece visit family and take some time off! I discovered quite a bit while I was there and developed a lot of ideas for George Briggs on the design side and business side.

George Briggs will be back in action for customs as of now! Unfortunately I will not be doing a Fall/Winter line based on the reasoning that there's just not enough time to follow through with a proper collection; especially being that we are already into Fall. It's very imported for me to produce work that isn't rushed and is executed properly! George Briggs will still be taking orders as usual and will be getting more involved with the community in this Fall to get the GB word out!

Blog posts will be every day or two so stay posted! It's going to be a packed Fall!

Killer Custom

It's been pretty intense the past month or two so I've brought in some help for the customs. Meaghan Kehoe is her name (not the one in the picture...that's a lovely friend and customer Sarah!) Trained as an illustrator she does some heavy heavy work, and her pieces pretty much speak for themselves. This wasn't her design in this custom (The artist is actually H. R. Giger who produced the original work) but this just gives you a peak into her stellar skills. I'll be posting some of her works sometime this week. It'll have to be by Thursday since I'm flying out to Greece that day for TWO MONTHS! PS about that! I will still be updating my blog as much as possible! And as for customs well I did give plenty of notice. Send me a message and I'll see if Meaghan will be able to set something up...

Nine Inch Nails Concert!!!

Went to the Nine Inch Nails / Janes Addiction concert last night! If you didn't go you missed out...Janes Addiction hasn't played here since 92' and NIN you just shouldn't ever miss. It's one of those bands that even if you don't like the music, the performance itself is worth experiencing. There was people from all walks there...I think there was more older people there who saw Jane's in 92' then anything else...pretty funny watching 50 year old couples trashed dancing around and screaming there face off!

It didn't hurt that it was outside either, Janes shoud've played in the day though and NIN at night...Anyways, I got a lot of inspiration from it so you may see some hints of it in Fall/Winter 09.

I've decided it's time to move on from just black paint. I've been itching for something a little different. One thing I really enjoy about doing customs orders is I get to attempt some very odd request which push me out of my comfort zone of what I'm used to. It allows me to expand and broaden my range of techniques and styles for my future lines.

For a close friend - Not completed here but interesting concept, he's all into the zombie little moster kind of thing

First wash on my nudies!

I decided it was about time to wash my Nudie's after about 9 months of not being washed...Although it may seem gross its actually not as bad as you may think. For those who are foreign to raw denim, these jeans were a solid dark navy blue colour (almost as dark as indigo can get). The indigo isn't set into the denim so as you where them out you create your own custom wash.

I've had a lot of raw denim from quite a few companies but I honestly can say my nudies have turned out the best...I also washed and treated them different from the rest. Word of advice, although many people argue about all the ways to prevent that lovely "earthy" smell from your denim, the best way is to keep the hanging in a well ventilated area when your not wearing them.

If you like the way my Nudies turned out here's some tips on getting them this way. I started of with Nudie Average Joe Raw Selvedge denim.

1. After about 6 months of wear (5 days a week) I roughed up the folds on the knees with sand paper.

2. I ripped out the nudie logo off the back pocket

3. I washed them in hot water with light detergent and let them dry in the sun for a day in a half

And thats about it!

Finally! Cruzin weathers back! Nothing better than hitting the burbs and riding around aimlessly...By the way, best way to get around Toronto? Hands down long boarding, your as fast as most cyclists, faster than cars since there all stuck in traffic and plus you don't have to lock it outside...admitatly it doesn't look so proffesional nor to practical when it comes to going out somewhere nice but on a daily basis it's amazing!

Too many shirts!

Although I do wear mostly George Briggs joints, not just because I should but I truly like what I design (this is a passion and love first and a business second), I do have a great appreciation for some of the other lines out there and feel I have to rock some other works.

Every line has a style that's distinct and unique to anyone else...

Although it's not my style much right now I have a huge appreciation for street wear, companies like Crooks & Castles, Franco Shade, The Hundreds, Alife etc...There's been a huge explosion in the sub-culture of street wear which has contributed to a creating a new way of looking at fashion overall, partly why I have so much respect for the style. I can't say I'm an expert on street wear but thats part of the great thing...most of the ones that rock it know so much backround of the companies and the clothing that its created a community of sorts in most major cities...the local street wear shop is more than just a store but a community center...

Every designer has inspirations and no designer can master every style, art, or aspect of the trade...but I'll push the boundaries farther then I think i can and embrace every second of this great ride.

George Briggs on the GO

Off to Brampton yesterday...have to get work done even when I'm on the go (no pun intended). It's actually one of my favorite places to do the more uncreative work of George Briggs (finances, invoices, etc...). I'm stuck on the bus for an hour or so anyway...I may as well get the less exciting stuff done since I can't really paint or draw on a moving bus...

Fast food is never as tasty as it looks...

On the way back though I was reading one of my favorite magazines AdBusters...it's more a zine since there's no adverts but I'd definitely recommend picking it up sometime in the near future. There A vancouver based organization primarily expressing there pro-counterconsummerism views (Canadians always stiring shit up :P). It's a little socialistic and in some cases leans towards being very anarchistic (which really isn't my views) but it has very interesting points countering many of the issues we see in our society today. It's completely self funded so its a pretty sure shot that you're getting the opinions and views they beleive in.

Article discussing how porn and sex are not as linked as we think they are...Unbelievable artist though...reminds me of 70-80's new age realism...

Specifically Greece (My Motherland!) and then Turkey, Germany, Amsterdam and Sweden. Partially because I haven't been back to Greece in a long time and partially for business. I'd like to see what potential I've got there...I think the European market is ready for George Briggs :)

Hello Again!

Sorry everyone...I've been having to deal with some complications and bumps recently so I've been behind schedule and not great on updating everyone on the details...Well I'm back on the map and as of Monday April 20th, Next Door will be caring George Briggs!

If anyone's curious about the complications...well its not that exciting but I'll fill you in:

1. Forgot to register my CA# - Gov enforced number to prove that I'm not having little kids sew the clothing...
2. Artists block...if your an artist you can understand sometimes the feel just doesn't seem right...
3. Labels are a lot more complicated than I thought...

This might seem unprofessional that I'm letting you in on the problems and issues that have come up but I think that's a bit silly since EVERY company in any industry runs into issues...So if you are interested why not know why?

Okay well...A lot to do!

Long day...

Had a long George Briggs day today. Missioned downtown...I live north of the city...to get some labels screened and realized it's a lot harder than I thought it would be. In theory make a silk screen with your template...UV it...and wash it out. But with small type it doesn't turn out the best so I'll have to think of a solution for that...

Other than that it was my first time taking the GO train. I would highly highly recommend it if you haven't before and you live out of the city. It's really relaxing and quiet. Anyways I have a lot to get finished for the stores so I'm off!

The rest will all be placed a little differently so even if by chance you see one of the other very few that have this shirt it won't exactly like yours. No matter the weather, it's always a good time for a walk...

My mind's been a bit cloudy with constant painting so decided I'd go for a bit of a walk. I don't know what peoples problem is with the rain...I think its quite relaxing. I find it allows me to figure things out that have been on my mind with out any distractions.

Going to print the labels and attach them tomorrow...Kind of excited actually. It really finalizes a piece to me...

I found a very inspiring clip recently but I don't want to fill up this blog with to much so I'll post it tomorrow :)

Yesterday definitely lifted my spirits...The sun was out, the ground was dry and it was 16 degrees!!! Which means summer is coming! :) or at least warm weather is in our horizon...

Lots of work to do...really I've noticed running your own business there will always be work to be done...Especially when your in the beginning stages. You're the marketing, design, finance, HR, Logistics ect...You are everything. But that's really why I love it...There is no other job that you'd be able to take on such a wide variety of responsibility than when you're running you're own business.

Hello Everyone

It's been quite a while since I last spoke to you guys. I have a few updates to let you know about. The best of all new is that Due West/Next Door will be carrying George Briggs. Located at the heart of Toronto's Fashion District, Queen and Spadina. I don't have an exact date but within the next two weeks!

Since my hands can only paint so fast I will be using additional techniques to produce George Briggs Apparel. I will be incorporating methods of silk screening in combination with painting by hand.

George Briggs is having it's first official photo shoot this Friday which I'm thoroughly excited about.

I must get back to George Briggs but I would like to leave you off with a sneak peak for spring and an amazing song and video I stumbled upon recently.

No I'm not wearing one of my shirts in that picture, I try to avoid it so I don't get unwanted paint on them...Have to be careful with special goods!

This is by far my favorite piece I've created so far. All my creations are unique and special to me in my own way but this has been a design I've wanted to do since I started George Briggs. It will be available for Spring Summer. But for this one I'm letting the people decide the specifics...whether it'll be on a T-shirt, V-neck, or dress and what colours should be used. Not everything can be fun as sitting around and designing and painting clothing...With all that comes the numbers...not the most thrilling thing. But it has to get done...What a lot of companies forget is if you take care of the taxes and all that jazz the government takes good care of you. Plus if you get caught well you'll be paying like Valentino did. $39 million? Something like that.Besides the boring stuff. We're going to be introducing summer dresses into the mix as well. :) You'll just have to wait to see what they'll look like!

By far one of the most creative and inspiring ad's I've seen in a while. Although it is essentially an ad it really speaks to me on a variety of levels. It revolves around looking at taking nothing and building it into anything it's applicable to many aspect of our lives. In my view it has to do with where I want to be in 10 years to the shirts and art I develop on a daily basis. Take it how you want but I think this is one of the best ad's ever made because it has a message that has the ability to inspire people.

No sleep makes George Briggs something something...

I've found those late night painting sessions are a lot more productive than during the day. For a good reason though...most art I find is created in an unstable state of mind. When the ability to think logically is not as strong as usual, ideas tend to come much more fluid.

I've started to experiment with quite a few techniques the past few nights...If there's anything to take out of this season when you do see it. It's that it will be quite organic and truly embracing the fact that it is hand painted.

I hope your excited to see how the spring line will look. Some of the shirts you've already seen that's not all to come...the rest will not be posted until a closer date of in our store release. :)

January: The worst month to shop

I've decided this based on a few things...I'll break it up into weeks.

Week 1: So packed from people waiting for everything to go on sale it's not worth stepping into any stores...
Week 2: What's left to pick from isn't worth it even at its sale price...
Week 3 - 4: There is literally no sales left and the new stuff that's arrived isn't the best to come...

So based on this not much to January to love on the fashion side of life...on the other hand February and March look much more promising from the look books that I've seen. Plus George Briggs will be coming out in stores end of February which is definitely something to look forward to!

Products of the good ol Canada!

I've been looking at these for a while and finally decided this is something I definitely needed to get. These are the Naked and Famous SlimGuy 21oz Japanese raw selvage denim. Long title but a lot of key things to bring up about them and why they are so unique...
Naked and Famous is a Canadian Premium Denim company out of Montreal...one of our only denim companies and the only one to make raw denim. They also are the heaviest denim on the market at 21oz. I underestimated how thick that really was. Thinking they were going to be as stiff as any raw denim they were actually not that bad. It makes sense though considering that to pack that much denim in there the weave can only be so tight. Couldn't help resist another pair of shoes before spring...the Nike Fragment Zoom Tennis Classic... not Canadian but the store Goodfoot definitely is...

From planning to production...

It's been a long day but a lot has been accomplished for George Briggs.

Curious about that picture of President Barack Obama? Don't be...not sure if it's an idea I'm going to go anywhere with...

This however is a peak into this summers release...

Experimenting with certain chemicals...trying to figure out what works and doesn't. One thing you can always be certain about is that any technique George Briggs uses are always thoroughly tested to make sure it holds up to the highest standards.

Unrelated to GB I heard this song today that I thought I'd share, It's a Justice Remix of N*E*R*D's She wants to move by the all knowing Justice...enjoy!

The Presidential Inauguration 2009

I know I'm not the only one blogging about this today but I still feel this deserves as much attention as possible.

Like always President Obama's speech was remarkable in his message and in literary terms as well but what I found was most captivating was the silence over the crowd. The crowd was so captivated with his speech they were practically entranced. As was I...never have I felt so safe or proud to be neighbours to The United States of America. It's not just beacuse of Barack Obama though, it's also because of the team that he's put together to accomplish the goals most Americans and the rest of the world hope they will achieve. His team is filled with young bright up and comers, the elder and experienced, ones that have been with him since the beginning of his political career and even people that have opposed his policies. For me this not only shows his dedication and determination to accomplishing the goals of what Americans have needed, but it also shows he acknowlades that everyone has differences and the importance of coming together because of it.

I really hope Canada and other nations around the globe take something out of what President Barack Obama and his campaign have stood for to better our people.

Besides Obama's speech I would like to note Joseph Lowery's speech aswell. I found his speech was honest and hopeful of whats to come; but also liked how he reflected on how far we've already come in terms of accepting other races.

buddha boards are crazy fun

If you don't know what these are...it's a board you draw on with water; as time goes by the water evaporates and you're drawing vanishes. It's a great way to brain storm. It feels like you're goofing off but (at least for me) I've come up with some pretty good ideas on it. Obviously the board isn't magical...it just allows you to loosen up and relax a way that paper can't.

I thought I'd give you guys a brief bio of who I am and what George Briggs is and what I want to come of it.

I am an artist originally and an entrepreneur by nature. As a chap I was trained in an advanced arts program where I learned the classics of art and design and since I was young I've always been looking for an opportunity to be innovative. I recently decided I wasn't going to wait for school to tell me my direction in life and jumped head first into the real world...and got hit pretty hard. I had tried to start an arts and culture magazine...which tanked, but I got a lot out of it that I was able to transfer into what I'm doing now.

I've always loved the process of creating art but never liked the stationary aspect of an artists work. I think the most natural thing for art is for it to live, to be in motion. Naturally that's what fashion is, but not many people can say that they're wearing something that was produced in the same way a painting is created. I wanted to do pieces people would be able to say are truly one of a kind. What better way then with a brush? Every stroke is different and has a personality.

As for where I want George Briggs to go? I have a general idea but I'd like to leave that up to my customers.

Remarkable plane landing on the Hudson

In so many ways this story is unbelievable. The pilot, Captain Chesley Sullenberger, was able to land a commercial airliner on the water after a flock of geese flew into the engines (imobilizing them), and then was able to evacuate the entire plane saving every passenger including his crew and himself. The ability needed to land a plane on the water with out the wings touching the water takes an immense amount of precision and experience. Captain Chesley Sullenberger has had 30 plus years of flying experience, along with years of teaching safety and evacuations, and years before that of learning to fly anything that has the ability to be airborne including glyders (essentially what he was flying on thursday).

Lately I've been noticing a lot of the people that have been able to get to the top of their field aren't the ones that are shaking the most hands, but working hard at making sure they do their job right. Not only with Captain Chesley Sullenberger but another huge example Barack Obama. A lot of us never heard of the president elect until he was in the race for The White House. These are just two examples yet look around at the people you talk to on a daily basis. You'll see that it is those who sit their but down and focus on the job at hand instead of boasting about what they would do, will be the top citizens of tomorrow. I would like to congratulate those who avoid the shortcuts and rightfully earn their success.

Working hard to get thoughs tasty pieces out on the racks

Finally getting down to business and getting the final pieces done to go in stores for spring...a little behind schedule but considering the weather lately I don't think it'll have much of an impact...but it's Canada we're supposed to be used to -20 degree weather...

Odd question but did anybody see the lights shooting straight up into the sky tonight in Toronto? They looked like the northern lights except I was looking south...any idea's let me know...and they weren't club lights...
